Frugal Friday – DIY Cutie Chalkboard!
Welcome to Frugal Friday! I have such a fun project to show you this week!
You may remember that I love to make things using old cabinet doors from
the Family Name Signs that I did in December.
Well I went shopping at our Habitat for Humanity outlet center again,
and picked up some more. I have been wanting to make a chalkboard for awhile,
and I found one door that worked perfectly for $2.00 – Unfortunately
in my excitement to begin my project, I didn’t take a picture of it till after
I had taped it up for painting! So here it is ready to paint.
I picked up my can of Chalkboard spray paint and went to work!
I gave it three coats, letting them dry in between. Which is not easy cause I want it
done now!! Then I went by Michaels and picked up some cute stuff and
a bottle of Mod Podge.
I will now pause for a short story – when I was
in my teens and of course the smartest person in the world, I thought my
Mom was so uncool because she made things using Mod Podge. Once
I had children of my own, I realized my Mom was brilliant, and now have lifted
my uncool ban towards the product. End of story.
So I picked up a bunch of scrapbooking stuff at Michaels cause hey, it was cute!
And I was sure I could figure out some kind of Mod Podge wizardry with it!
I started out with some paper sticky ribbon. ( I feel certain that you scrapbookers have an
official name for it and you have my deepest apologies for my lack of knowledge.)
First I put it on the frame to decide placement.
Then I Mod Podged the heck out of the back of it, brushing it on with a sponge brush.
Then I smoothed it into place with a dry soft rag, pressing out any bubbles.
I used two different ribbons, applying them on all four sides in the same way.
See the little hole in the bottom right hand corner? That was where the knob was
when this was actually used as a door – wanna see what this lazy crafter did to cover it?
Yep – that is a button! I picked up a packet of them because they matched so
well with the other things I had. I didn’t think about the fact that they
wouldn’t have a flat back because they were, after all, buttons. More on that later.
Now I needed to decide exactly which direction I was going with this project.
After, of course, I got the Mod Podge off of the wood floor….
By the way – it cleans up with soap and water – just in case you need to know that.
I was toying with the idea of making one of those cute kitchen chalkboards
where you write down the weeks menu.
Or I could make a chalkboard for my darling grandkids…. tough call…
I am such a pushover for my Grandkids! So now all I have to do is place my alphabet
stickers around the board -and then figure out how to add in those cute buttons.
See that little plastic thingy on the back – turns out you can cut it off with kitchen
shears if you are one determined crafter! As I am..
So I glued the buttons onto the corners of the board.
Here it is with all the little pretties in place. Now comes the Mod Podge.
I thinned some of it with water and brushed it over the entire frame to seal and
secure all of the stickers.
Bear in mind that I still don’t really know what I am doing..
Then I let it dry! Here is the finished product in my Grandkids room and I adore it!
Isn’t it just “oh my stinkin heck” cute!!
And the cost of it is under $10 – less if you plan on using the Mod Podge and the paint again.
I hope you enjoyed your visit here – ya’ll come back now!
And be sure to check out more super ideas at these sites I am linking up to!

Truly….you have given me inspiration here!!!! I have been wanting to put a chalkboard out in my husband’s workbench area. He’s always putting things away where he thinks he can remember =========but forgets where he put the things. I thought if I put a board up for him, he could write it all down as he stores things. Thank you for the idea.

Lovely chalkboard! I would have gone for the children’s board too. Although I must admit that the chalkboard I stuck on the inside of a cabinet door is really working as a menu reminder.

A woman after my own heart! From begrudging acceptance of the wacky things mom used to do, to taking a picture of the spilled mod podge. Love it. It turned out great!

Very cute. Love Mod Podge too. Had my jar out yesterday to do some jewelry. Never again! Whatever the cost it’s worth it to just buy my jewels.

Great idea! There is a Habitat store where I’m headed tomorrow so after the baby shower, I think I’ll just look around with your eyes. Maybe there will be something fun for me to do over spring break besides clean house!
