Dollar Store Decor – Kid's Name Plate
Ok – I am going to begin this post with a disclaimer..
I have been doing some projects using $5 worth of stuff from the Dollar Store. I
am planning on entering Living With Lindsey’s dollar store challenge next week.
You can find a link to her site on
my sidebar – it explains about the contest -
If you want to see my other Dollar Store projects – here are links -
(If you are also entering it too, please don’t use my idea’s: not that they are
that great anyway!)
so, with that out of the way…
………. today’s dollar decor project is not what you would call elegant.
It is more of a cute project for kids. So don’t expect to look at it and gasp at
the amazing piece of home decor I made that looks like it cost hundreds of dollars!
Cause this ain’t it!!
I have 4 absolutely adorable grandchildren. And I am so incredibly blessed
to have them all live in the same area I do. So they get to come over and spend
the night at Grandma’s! Not as often as I’d like, considering I have a full
time job. They take turns, and they always know who’s turn is next.
I have made my spare bedroom into my grandchildrens room.
(those of you that are worried that I will continue to talk nonstop throughout
this post, just hang on, pictures and tutorial are actually coming , I promise)
I decided it would be fun if I made them each their own name sign to
put on the door while they are here. This is how I made it!
I started with this group of items from the dollar store.
I used some chalkboard paint to spray the wooden piece.
Don’t you just love my groovy dropcloth??
So now I had a small chalkboard -
My grandson Caden spent the night this weekend, so I let him choose
which sports piece he wanted on with his name. He choose a football.
I put a piece of tape on the back of it. You know, that spongy double stick stuff you use to
hang lightweight things on the wall. Yep – that’s the official name of it..
Then I hot glued the yellow twine (also dollar store) around the edge.
Now that I have my main piece, I can change out the name and emblem
depending on which child is spending the night.
For instance – Kelsi likes cats, so here is hers.
Matthias likes baseball bat’s, and balls.
(And he does not go by Matt either it just fits on there better)
Jordy is the one whose turn to spend the night is coming up next -
and she loves dog’s. So her name is on the door ready for her
(and yes, Grandma needs to get rid of the excess glue!)
I put a little basket with the other wooden emblems and a piece
chalkĀ in it on the doorknob, so we can change out the plate anytime!
With the sticky stuff on the wooden piece, the
wooden emblems just pull right off and a different one
goes on. I assume I will have to renew the tape on occasion.
So what do you think? Obviously if you are making them
for your kids you could just make one for each one of them -
At around $2 each you could even make them for their friends!!
I found out recently that I am going to be a Grandma again!
Twice!! Both of my daughters are pregnant and due within
a month of each other!! I am so excited!! So I just
wanted to share on this post some T-shirts that I ordered
when we found out there were babies coming.
I ordered them from Zoey’s Attic – here is what I got!
Aren’t they absolutely adorable! She personalizes them with the names
and the color and order of the little chicks. And she takes such care
with packaging them – they were so fun to unpack!!
You should go check her out - Zoey’s Attic
Look how excited my kids were with them!
Whew!! Congrats – you made it to the end!! Thanks
so much for coming by The Little Brown House!

so cute! caden was excited to see something he had done “online”! have you ever seen the velcro tape? you could also use that if the double sided tape doesn’t last long. I use it for Jordyn’s paperdolls.
