Frugal Friday – DIY Stool Makeover
Hi! Welcome to Frugal Friday at The Little Brown House! This week’s project is not
a mind blower or anything – but I think it is cute and cheap and maybe it will
inspire you to re-purpose an old stool you have hanging out in your house.
First of all – I have to address this…. I feel like a junior high kid but I can’t say
the word stool without giggling…. does anyone else remember that stage of life when “potty”
words made you laugh? I can’t hear the word stool without immediately thinking “stool movement”.
Which the name Doctors and Smart people use for.. well you know.. Stick around till the end
of this post and I will share a story about that term with you. Oh oh oh! Story time!! I have a
feeling I just lost 3/4 of you, and the rest are now scrolling through to get to the end.
So – here is my stool…(giggle)
I had my husband make two of these for me a few years ago. They are the exact height of
our dining room chairs, so we can pull them in when we have big family dinners.
I also have one in the bathroom so the grandkids can use it to reach the sink
and wash their hands. I can’t remember what it cost to make them, but it was minimal.
As you may remember from last weeks post, I have been in a black and white mood lately..
So I decided to paint the stool black and put it near this console at our front door. Everytime
the “Grands” come over they take off their shoes as soon as they come inside. I wanted
a place for them to sit down when they take them off and put them back on.
So I spray painted the stool black to go with the console.
It was one those times where I asked myself why I hadn’t done that a long time ago!
I am still amazed at the renewing quality of paint. A fresh coat makes almost
everything look better! But I wasn’t willing to just stop there – it looked to plain.
I was looking at the Damask paper I had used on the console, and started thinking
about how I could get that same effect on the stool.
I decided to do the same kind of technique I used on the doormat wall art
I did a few months ago –
Frugal Friday – Doormat to Wall Art
Basically you just put something that has an open pattern on top of an item
and spray paint over it so the pattern comes off on the item, in this case a stool…(giggle)
I decided I would use a doily I had purchased at the Dollar Store. But do you think I
could find it? Nope.. 3 months ago I swear it popped up in every drawer and closet
I opened. But when I need it – it lays low…
But I was not to be deterred. Cause I’m a stubborn gal and gosh darn it I was
going to make this craft happen! I found an old circular table topper I have had
for decades. It is made of polyester or nylon or milk jugs –
I don’t know..something non-natural.
But it was cheap and held no sentimental value whatsoever. Perfect!!
I laid it over the stool and then went to town with Heirloom White.
(Isn’t that an old country song?)
This method does not produce a clean, sharp edged transfer, and that isn’t what I was going for.
(I just slipped a disclaimer in – did you notice?)
I seriously love the look of it! I don’t know what I was expecting, but I like what I got!
And it would be so easy to just spray it black again if I grow tired of it.
(That should probably say when, knowing me!)
So there it is, the rags to riches story of a poor unattractive stool
that was shot to stardom with just a simple makeover..
And as promised I will now tell my story to those of you who stuck by me
to the end. Those of you that scrolled down, well, you should just be ashamed of yourselves..
As some of you know I am the Weekend Service Producer at a large church.
One weekend we had a group of three of our elders delivering the message. Each
service holds around 2000 people. I had set 3 stools out on the stage for the guys,
and placed them in the correct position for camera’s and lighting. Well, when
the “old” guys got out there they weren’t happy with the set up, so they started
dragging the stools around on the stage to get them situated to their liking.
While 2000 people are watching and waiting for them to begin…
I am standing behind stage going nuts at this.. When they were finally done and settled
in, the oldest one of the “old guys” spoke quite clearly into his microphone and made this
opening statement. “I bet you didn’t plan on coming here today to watch three old
men having a stool movement on stage.”…… We like to never got the crowd
settled down after that..
That’s my story, and my project. Thanks so much for stopping by,
you have no idea how much I appreciate you all!
Now go check out these other parties!
