Frugal Friday – Friendship/Garden Sign

Welcome to Frugal Friday at The Little Brown House!

If you have come here before, you may know about my love of cabinet

doors. I get them at the Habitat for Humanity Reuse store for a couple of

dollars each, and have used them for a few projects-

You can see this sign here: Family Established Sign

And this one here: Good and Perfect Sign

Well I have made yet another cabinet door sign I think you may like –

The best thing about this one is that the vinyl saying came from the

Dollar Tree – making this a very frugal craft project!

I started out with an old ugly cabinet door -

I think it is pine. Anyway, it was small and I wasn’t sure what I

wanted to do with it until a couple of weeks ago.

I decided to paint it black – as most of you know I have been going through

a “Black and White” phase!

It has a little knothole in it, but for some reason that doesn’t bother me.

But after I painted it, I realized that the Dollar Store vinyl I was using

had black lettering. Which wasn’t going to show up well on my black

cabinet door! So I decided to paint the inside an off-white -

Now it will work!

I simply peeled off the vinyl backing and stuck it in the center of the board -

Then I took a ribbon and stapled it to the back to be used to hang it.

And I ended up with a sign that would look adorable inside a home,

but also super cute on the outside next to a patio or garden area!

And it only cost around $3 to make!

I am planning on making another one for myself – but I decided

to give this one to my fave sister for her birthday!

Ok, calm down the rest of you sis’s – I guess you are all my faves!

I also included another Coffee Wreath in my gift to her -

So here are two gifts I made myself for a total of $5!!

I added a gift card to it, cause she is my sis-

but I know she would have been happy with just these.

So be thinking about this kind of craft for any events you have

coming up that require a gift, and don’t forget Christmas is

just around the corner! I will have to come up with something

new for this sister though!

Thanks so much for stopping by The House – be sure and check

out these other parties I am hooking up to!

I love this idea. Very clever re-use of doors. I’m going to try to make it to our Habitat Re-Store this weekend. Wish me luck!

Another great project! I just found out about ReStore…but haven’t had a chance to go over there yet. Now I will have to for sure! Thanks for the inspiration (even though this one rubs in my nose how my wreath didn’t turn out as great as yours)!

CUTE!! and easy! I can totally do it, I did not even know the dollar store had vinyl. I really like all the signs you did and I still have to give the coffee filter wreath a try, they look so darn cute!

will you share with me the instructions for the coffee wreath?

Ada May 1st, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Ohmygosh! I just yesterday got a cabinet door at Habitat to make a sign. Yours are suuuuuper cute. The Spencer Family one is my fave and will be duplicated at my house soon. Of course, it won’t say Spencer. :)

These are adorable. And I have the same vinyl things from the $store and now I know just what to do with them.

Thanks!

Oh gosh. Now I am definitely picking up some of these next time I am at the Dollar Tree. And I’ve recently found a place where I can get reasonably priced cabinet doors. I’m in so much trouble!

Deborah June 15th, 2010 at 6:05 pm

I love it!!! It’s fabulous!

Tanya June 17th, 2010 at 1:08 pm

You got vinyl at which dollar store??? I haven’t seen it at Dollar Tree. That project rocks! I also love cabinet doors from ReStore.

Erin @ Where Beauty Meets Function August 16th, 2010 at 11:02 am

That is fantastic!!

I bought a couple of the vinyl decals at the Dollar Tree and put it on my wall. It was too ‘stickery’ looking. But now I want to try it again…maybe with a different background!! Thanks for re-inspiring me. :)
