Frugal Friday – Chic $5 Light
Welcome to Frugal Friday!! Every week I like to highlight something
I am working on or have found that is fun, cheap, and useful.
The past two weeks we have been working on our Master Bathroom,
and believe me , I use that term loosely. Not the bathroom part – it definitely is that.
We put it in ourselves. Of course I use the royal “We” meaning him.. Anyway – we basically
doubled a closet and made it a bathroom – not a walk in closet either, a standard one with
the two sliding doors. But I digress – quite often actually.
We are trying to do a bathroom remodel “on the cheap”. That is actually the way we have to
do most of our projects! I’d like to think that I would still do things that way even
if I had lots of money. Maybe someday I can find out?
Here is our bathroom “before”
I know – not very special and stuck in a time warp. When you have lived
in a house for 20 years you do eventually come to that point!
Now we (meaning him) begin the demolition..
Pretty huh! And yes that is the original wood floor underneath. My husband says
we can’t use it and must tile over it.. Oh well..
Here it is with the new tile up and the painting begun. The painting is where
I actually enter the process – that is my job.
I so love this glass tile!
I know what you are saying right now – is she ever going to stop talking and
get to the light fixture?? Either that or you have already scrolled down to the
end and just looked at the pictures.. maybe I should insert a secret giveaway into the
middle of my posts so people have to read the whole thing…hmm I will have to think about that!
So I found this lovely gold number at the Restore – under $4.
Shiny huh! These must have gone into a million new homes in the 80s and 90s!
So I did to it what any DIYer would do – I spray painted that puppy Heirloom
White… I have heard rumors that they are retiring that color.. the fear of that
makes it hard for me to sleep at night sometimes..
This picture was obviously taken mid-process.
I really wanted some kind of medallion on this light – and one night
on the drive home from work I came up with the perfect idea!
(my husband hates it when I do that!)
I was remembering those cute little trays from the Dollar Store that
I used in a project awhile back -
They started out like this – and were transformed into this -
You can go here to check out the project – but come right back!
Dollar Store Decor – Romantic Wall Art
I remembered how cute the trays looked in Heirloom White, and came home and
asked my husband if he could make it into a medallion with the light fixture.
He gave me a funny look and rolled his eyes – if I had a nickle for every time that happened….
But he made it work! He drilled a hole into the tin platter and
put it up with the light fixture -
Warning – the following pictures were taken in low light, and I hate using my camera flash!
– please don’t judge me!
I am so in love with it! And for $5 you can’t beat it!
I can’t wait to show you the rest of the remodel
when we get it done.
Thanks so much for coming by The Little Brown House – I appreciate you all!

So fun and thrifty! Love the ceiling medallion! I would of never thought of using a tray like that. Fantastic and so pretty. I do love the hardwoods in the bath. My father-in-law just put all new hardwoods in their 1/2 bath. I’m sure with the steam it would do something to a full bath, but I do love the look too! Thanks for sharing;)
