Diy Blue Glass Jar

Welcome to Frugal Friday at The Little Brown House!

(Insert insecure blogger paragraph here)

Disclaimer…. I had some struggles with this project, and have included the

different methods I tried. So there are three different results to choose from!

Hopefully you will like at least one of them!

I have been seeing the blue glass jars around lately, in Pottery Barn catalogs and such.

They are replica’s of the antique fruit jars that looked like this:

And this -

I have seen people make these on their own for much less expense

using Mod Podge and paint, so I decided to try it myself!

I used a Longaberger jar that I had. I sold Longaberger baskets for 10 years, so I

have everything Longaberger! I grabbed some craft paint that I had, it is called Caribbean.

And then, of course, the Mod Podge. (does anyone else think that name is hysterical? )

I used about 1/4 to 1/2 cup mod podge, and then added drops of paint until I got the color I wanted.

I stirred it with a fancy paint tool – aka plastic knife!

I poured the mixture into the bottle.

Then I rolled it around until the inside

was covered completely.

Then I put it into the oven at 250 degree’s for 1 hour

to dry and set the glaze.

I have to give you this disclaimer if you attempt this project.

The paint runs down the sides of the glass, so the resulting finish is not

smooth. There are streaks and uneven covering on the jar. I will show you

some pics of the finished product, and then show you two different things I

did and how they turned out. Then you can decide which way you want to do yours!

Here is the finished jar, with some Peony’s from my yard -

I thought it was very pretty, but I wanted to try to get one that was more evenly glazed.

So I tried it on a smaller jar with straight edges rather than the rounded sides .

I liked the results!

I liked the fact that it was a little more transparent and there was less streaking.

I still really wanted to try it with the larger rounded jar, so I decided to try it again

with just paint. I took some of my latex wall paint in off-white and mixed in some of

the Caribbean craft paint. Then I poured that into another Longaberger jar..

cause I do have a few! Instead of putting it in the oven, I used a hairdryer on it

until the inside was set, then left it out all night to dry. Here is the result.

I kind of liked the soft creamy look, and it covered completely so there are no

drips or runs. That satisfies my OCD!

Which ever way you decide to color your jar, please give it lots of time to dry.

I am so impatient I wanted to take pictures right away, and ended up scratching

the inside edges, and having to do things over – do as I say, not as I do!

( I am so my own worst enemy!)

Thanks so much for coming by and looking at my project!

I love visitors and comments!!

Tell me what you think – or if you have tried this yourself, or plan to!

And please check out the other great ideas at these parties!
