Felt Flower Lamp Shade

Welcome! I am excited to share this tutorial with you today.

Some of you may remember that I recieved several antique

pieces of furniture from my Mom a couple of months ago.

The Patina Of Time

One of those items was a buffet that I put in our family room.

Of course then I needed to get new lamps for it – you understand right?

I really fell hard for these lamps. I love the shape and the size

for this space. The base is a silvery mercury glass type finish.

The shades, however, are grey.

And I didn’t feel they went all

that well with the buffet or the room. My colors in this room are

brown, beige, and black. So I went searching for lamp shades

and just could not find the look I wanted that would work with them.

I started noticing lots of crafts on blogs that were using

felt and making flowers with it.

For instance:

This one at Classy Clutter – you can find the tutorial here:

Classy Clutter

Then I found these adorable felt covered pendant shades at Design Sponge

You can find that tutorial here:

Design Sponge

I thought I may be able to make the gray lampshades work

If I put some felt flowers on them in the colors beige and brown.

So I went and got some felt at Michaels and began playing with it!

I decided I wanted to make one large flower for the center

of each section on the shade.

I started with cutting some circles in the two colors.

Looks a little bit like the CBS logo right now..

I purchased some “gems” at  Michaels also to use in the center of each flower.

I alternated the colors and made the flower by hot glueing the pieces together.

I “scrunched” each circle up a little bit as I glued it to give it a ruffled look.

Then I took a bunch of the beige felt and cut it into circles, putting a bead

of glue down the center of each one.

Then folded it in half to make a crescent.

Meanwhile, I glued my large finished flowers to rectangles of felt.

And began an assembly line of adding petals to the flowers!

You take one of the crescent shaped petals, put a bead of glue along the back,

and glue it behind the flower – alternating placement as you work your way out.

I feel the need to pause at this point in the process and confess to you

that I am not a perfectionist. I used to be, but the meds helped…

Anyway – it is hard to be perfect with felt. The edges are not smooth

on these petals are not smooth and even – and I am ok with that.

Just wanted you to know….feel free to be perfect with yours

should you choose to make some! Ok – confession time over!

At this point I glued the back of the flower piece and began fitting

them on the shade. I ended up doing it this way, rather than glueing the flowers

directly to the shade, because it seemed to make more sense to me.

It used less glue and I felt I had an easier repositioning potential.

I don’t have pictures of this part of the process, because it took both

hands and some trial and error. I placed the flowers sections on the shade,

then looked all the way around, filling in petals where needed

and using petals to cover the seams where the felt backing pieces met each other.

Phew! Yes it is a lengthy process! And I was unsure right up to the end

as to whether I would even like the finished product.

But I do!

Now I just have to get it in gear and do the same thing on the other lampshade!

Thanks so much for coming by – and please let me know what you think-

And go check out these parties for more great ideas and crafts!

Very nice makeover. I painted a lamp and shade and it needs a little pizzaz. Maybe flowers like these will do the trick.

Very nicely done! I confess that I am in the process of becomeing less of a perfectionist… I thought it was part of the 40 someting – I mean there has to be some benefits of getting older right? But meds would be nice too Thanks for the link to the “Breaking Dawn” cake post too – that was just to funny. Nice to know that i am not the only one who has crazy thoughts and conversations with her husband … also good to know that men seem to be so similar in their response to our insanity:) Happy New Year by the way!
