DIY Black and White Platter
One week ago today was my first trip to Hobby Lobby -
I chronicled the journey here:
My Pilgrimage to Hobby Mecca..
I took pictures of a few things while I was there -
I have always had a love affair with Black and White, so this naturally caught my eye.
Love it..
I think it was around $30, and not on sale, so I didn’t get it.
But it crept into my mind and stayed there.
I decided I would try to recreate it, if not exactly, then at least the idea.
I started, where all good things do, at the Dollar Store.
I picked up this clear plastic tray because it was around the same size as the original piece.
I brought it home and spray painted it…. what else… Rustolium Heirloom White
You know, Heavens own color…
Then I got out my own little ‘Craft Store in a machine’
My Silhouette HD… which I adore..
I searched for paisley in the online store and found a piece very similar to the original
I bought it, and also a flourish. .99 cents each.
I put them together with a flower and another flourish I already had.
Then I cut them out of black vinyl.
I will tell you – I still struggle a little bit with this process.
The machine can do so many things, I feel like I have only scratched the surface.
And, I still have a hard time with intricate patterns – getting them off intact.
As you will see with my project…
The center of the large paisley was full of flowers. Was being the operative word…
So I just made some extra flowers and stuck them in the center of it.
If you look at the original, it isn’t perfect…
And that is why I purposefully messed up on mine..no really – it was a deliberate choice..
So, I just put the vinyl shapes randomly on the tray – and this is what I came up with.
All for the cost of around $3… not including the machine, of course:)
I put it on my little black and white entry console.
Sometimes I overdo things – I may be getting to that point with this area!
I kind of like it.. not as much as the inspiration piece, but enough..
And the price was certainly right!!
Let me know what you think!
If you are interested in how I made the console – here is a link
Thank you so much for coming by!

Oh my stars, I am just swooning over your DIY chic!!!! That platter looks AMAZING!!!!!
Hobby Lobby is both a blessing and a curse. I have both HL and JoAnns (and Target if we are being really real here) less than 3 miles away. It can be a dangerous place for my budget to be sure. Make sure you go t0 Hobby Lobby’s website, if you haven’t already and sign up for the coupons, which are emailed weekend and usually 40% off which tends to help me with my Lust List! LOL
Great crafting my dear, blog friend!

Looks fantastic! I love the Dollar Store. I use id for lots of “throw away” decorating for my classroom. Actually, I don’t throw the decorations away. I tend tp raffle them off to the kids. They love it. (And I don’t charge for the raffle. It’s just a fancy way to get rid of stuff.)

I LOVE it!!! I think you did a great job! I also struggle getting intricate designs off. I bought a flourish that I can not get off without ripping it!! Frustrating!! You are going great.

Love it! I was actually in my beloved Dollar Store and saw the tray you used for this creation. I also love my Silhouette machine but don’t use it as much as I should. I love the design you used. You have inspired me.

A happy mistake.
The way it’s supposed to be. I love how your platter turned out, and I’m TOTALLY loving your black & white console table. Did you build the table or buy it?

Just purchased my Silhouette, and I really like your tray and the mugs in the background. I’m not sure that my fingers are quite so nimble, but we’ll find out.
Best,
