Beadboard Wallpaper Back Splash

Does anyone else out there have a kitchen that is stuck in the 90′s?

Please tell me yes so I know I’m not alone!

My kitchen is pretty dated, and up until a couple of weeks ago,

it even had a flowered wallpaper border. Sorry if I made you throw up..

I desperately want to paint the cabinets, but my husband is a stick-in-the-mud

little reluctant to do that..he is really digging his heels in on this one.

So, while I am trying to convince him/win him over, I decided to at least make

a change to the flowered border backsplash. I had seen the paintable beadboard

wallpaper on other sites, and decided to look for some. I was able to find some

at Lowes online for $15 a roll, so I ordered it!

The name of it is Style Selections  Beadboard Paintable Wallpaper

if you want to go check it out at Lowes online.

My husband was so excited and happy to help me with this project…

He tried to schedule himself a root canal or colonoscopy to get out of it,

but was unsuccessful…

We started by clearing everything off of the counter –

Can you see what a minimalist I am??

So this is a before picture – showing the offending flowers..

I do love flowers, but I am so over these..

For some reason this makes me want to go put on shoulder pads

and make my hair gargantuan…. weird huh?

Here is that little roll of $15 wonderfulness that is

going to bring me and my kitchen into this century…

First we began the task of stripping off the old wallpaper.

I was so excited when my husband removed the wood trim. We found yet another patch

of old wallpaper behind it… it was all from my “romantic” period..

You can see the awesome tools I have for home improvement.

When the spatula stopped working, I resorted to using my fingernail.

It so pays to have acrylic nails.. you can use that on your husband if you’d like.

After all the trouble it was to get that old wallpaper off, I couldn’t believe we

were just going to put more on! I kept reminding myself that it wouldn’t look like wallpaper.

I seemed to me this wallpaper went up quite easily,

I eventually realized that was because my husband put it up.

My job was to paint it..

I purchased my first Purdy paintbrush for this project.

Isn’t it purdy?

Oh come on, don’t pretend you didn’t see that coming..

Anyway, I loved it.

It applied paint like a dream, to both the trim and the paper.

And I am so happy with the finished project -

It is hopefully only the start of an updated kitchen,

but it made it seem much more open and bright

that it gives me hope and inspiration for the rest of the job!

I have already finished a couple of projects

to use in here -to go along with the new look.

I still have a ways to go – like maybe painting the cabinets???

Oh well, at least it is a start!

And there are much bigger problems in the world than

needing…. I mean wanting, to update a kitchen – right?

Baby steps…

I might change the name of my blog to that..

Thanks so much for coming by, and listening to me whine..

Here are links to the two new projects I have made for the kitchen.

we have the same kitchen!!! Well, not now that you’ve done such an amazing job with the wallpaper. So you would recommend it eh? What did you do around your window, I mean, how far up does the wallpaper go? Looks fantastic!

It looks great! I love the beadboard wallpaper! We used it in a bedroom make-over and it really looks great!
Your kitchen is very nice. We have similar cupboards and my hubby is not keen on the painting either. However we did add white knobs and handles and that helped brighten up the cupboards!

My kitchen cabinets look eerily similar to yours! The only difference is I don’t have glass in any doors, but the cabinet design looks exact! My hubby won’t let me paint ours either. Of course, we are on the market to downsize, so I’m not looking to do it now anyway. I have told him though that I want a white or cream colored kitchen next house. I think Debra from Common Grounds’ kitchen makeover is a stunning example of what painting cabinets white can do for a kitchen. Maybe you’ll have better luck. I think the hubby’s hesitate because they know it is a big job and they will be involved somehow! : )

Looks really good, much more modern. Funny how something that is really old, like beadboard, will make something look new! That’s a sure sign of a classic, I guess!

Why its just ‘purdy’! ;-) LOVE the beadboard. I would love white cabinets too, but I haven’t gotten brave enough to tackle the job. Plus there is the thought of what if I don’t like them in a few years too?! LOL

You did an awesome job on the back splash. My kitchen was stuck in the 90′s for sure. Even had the flouresent lighting! I used paint and paintable wallpaper to transform it, too. Makes you feel so much better, doesn’t it???

Ohh I am so doing this. We have our house up for sale. So, I am not to do any major things to the house. (per husband) Ya know, the things that will mean he has to help finish it

    $15. I can swing that!

I am so excited! Thank you!

i love the new back splash. such a great change and inexpensive too. i like.

you know what you should do to win your husband over on the cabinet issue? have a poll on your blog. i would totally vote to paint. my father-in-law recently painted his kitchen cabinets (just like yours, actually a dark walnut stain) and it was an amazing transformation. i am sure you could get enough votes to show you are right.

my kitchen on the other hand, is stuck in the 1950s and we are renting, and it is the size of a closet, complete with the water heater in the corner, directly next to the stove, directly next to the fridge!

I can sympathize with those of you whose husbands are being stubborn about the cabinets. My late father-in-law owned a paint and wallpaper store, and would sometimes do the painting and papering jobs himself for a “select clientele”. (Extremely picky millionaire and billionaire homeowners who were willing to pay for his expertise and meticulous attention to detail.) He said that it is common for men to balk at the idea of painting doors, cabinets and trim. He’d always tell them, “Just because it’s wood, doesn’t mean it’s good.” In his opinion, builder’s grade oak cabinets definitely fell into the category of “not good”, especially the ones with that orangey-colored finish. He said, “If they’re not antique, not of historical importance, not particularly valuable, and not attractive, go ahead and paint ‘em. It’s an inexpensive alternative to replacement. Why live with ugly?” Can’t argue with that.

I soooo want to paint my cabinets from the 70′s. We had white cabinets in our last house and I loved them! My husband is not quite so ready. But we will see what we see in the future. I can be pretty persuasive!

Great backsplash update. And yes! Paint the cabinets! If you like dark brown, take a look at Benjamin Moore’s Bittersweet Chocolate. It would pick up the dark color in the rug and your counters would pop! Will look forward to seeing your progress but you’re off to a terrific start. We are a kitchen-loving blog. Happy Easter. Jane

I say paint the cabinets . I like what Tullulah said about her father in laws opinion about painting cabinets

an off white Ivory color I have seen ladies paint their cabinets grey but that has to blend with your other kitchen colors

    I hope you paint them

Looks very nice, it makes the perfect backdrop to your coffee sign. I also have a 90′s kitchen. My wallpaper border is on a sponge painted (subtly sponged but sponged none the less) soffit, the pattern is fruits. I want to remove the border and repaint the soffit – no sponge this time. I had the same wallpaper you found under the trim piece in our last house, that was from mid 80′s I believe. Love your blog – you are a hoot.

We were thinking about installing beadoard as a backsplash in our kitchen…THIS option looks SO much easier…providing we can smooth out the walls after taking off the awful tiles! THAT’S where my hubby starts digging his feet… :)

What if you install knobs until you can convince him that painting the cabinets would be a great idea? Just find some knobs that will coordinate with the color you want the cabinets to end up being. It may help in the mean time.

I’ve been wanting to do this for years. Thanks for sharing your source! It looks great. I would tell your husband that coming from a decorator – your cabinets need to be painted because they are never supposed to be the SAME color as your floor – too much wood and nothing is ‘showcased’ nothing stands out, it’s just a sea of wood. So if you paint your cabinets it will highlight your lovely wood floor (it will pop) and so will your newly painted cabinets!

Your beadboard backsplash looks fabulous! I think it makes your kitchen feel extra cozy! The trim at the bottom really finishes it off perfectly. I love your sink, by the way. I had almost the same kitchen and I painted my cabinets white and also did a beadboard backsplash. I even have the same black Kitchenaid stand mixer!

No one can tell it’s wallpaper and I’ve been loving the maintenance of it. I’m so glad to finally see a room with it and you did a beautiful job.
