DIY $5 Shrug
This is such a quick and easy little project! I made it in about
20 minutes tonight after I got home from work.
I saw a picture of one on Pinterest –
If you haven’t checked Pinterest
out yet you should go take a look at it. I love it!

The picture let to a tutorial on this website:
I started with a plain black T-Shirt that I had.
I saw some today at Walmart for $4 each – a variety of colors.
Start by cutting the shirt right down the center.
Then you will sew a hem all around the shirt – from the bottom of one
cut side to the other, including the neckline.
Now you simply run a ribbon through the hem!
I used about 3 yards of ribbon, .27 cents per yard at Walmart.
Leave enough ribbon hanging down on each side of the shirt
to tie a bow. And you are done! Ready to try it on!
Please excuse the horrid self-picture – it was the end of the day
and I am looking a little ragged. But the shrug is darn cute huh?
The nice thing is you can tie it at any height you want.
It definately looks better on my figure when I tie
it lower down. One of the things I love about shrugs is that
they hide the back fat… you know, roll that shows up
under your bra strap? Or is that just me…..?
So I plan on making about 345 of these in every color and print under
the sun to get me through the summer – it not only hides the back fat,
it does a pretty sweet job disguising the dreaded muffin top too…
Not that I struggle with that, you know..
So – isn’t this a fun project?? Or am I just easily entertained?

Ooo that’s cute! Did you end up using a larger T-shirt than you would normally wear? I must make one or ten of these!

Karrie had my question also…..I am thinking it must be a size larger, but for $4 (or 65% off of $2 @ one of my favorite Thrift Stores next Monday), I will experiment too. Thanks for yet another inspiration…;-)

It fit me pretty well, I used a large but it seemed to run small. I don’t think you would need a bigger than normal size because of the gap that is left in the middle, it makes it bigger. Does that make sense?

Very clever! I like it! I especially like that it’s versatile enough to tie it at different heights for differen looks.

omg!! I LOVE Pinterest, just found it a few days ago. I love this shrug. And I have plenty of rolls to hide LOL. I looked at the original tutorial too and the pics there…they are all the real short ones. Is that because they tied them tighter or used a smaller size shirt? I love the way it looks tied lower…so not at accent a muffin top!!

How fun and simple! I can imagine dressing this up and down in so many different ways! Don’t have a sewing machine yet but will be pinning this for future reference.
