Diy Pillow Shams
I did a post the other day about my bedroom makeover -
You can go check it out here if you haven’t seen it.
Ocean Inspired Bedroom Makeover
I promised to do a couple of tutorials on some of the things I put together.
So, as promised, here is one for the Pillow Shams.
I wanted something white, a little ruffled, and soft.
I actually was going for the wrinkled look with this makeover!
For some reason white and slightly rumpled looks like summer to me.
Possibly because it is a somewhat lazy look… Anyone else
long for lazy this summer? I would like to try it for a while…
The problem was cost. So I when I found these pillow covers at Ross,
I started to get an idea for my shams. I knew the price was right..
In case you can’t see the tag, that is $3 for two covers.. yep..
Now I had to figure out the ruffle part.
I thought I would go to the fabric store and buy some pre-made
ruffling. The problem, once again, was price. I was going to need
a lot of it and that could get spendy. Then I started thinking about some
clothing that I don’t choose to wear, but could be repurposed for something.
Enter exhibit A
Very pretty.. but I wouldn’t wear it out in public.
Trust me, that is an episode of “Not Your G-Ma’s Wardrobe”
that no one wants to see happen………
So I took my scissors to this.
It was great! The ruffles were already made
(I hate making ruffles by hand)
There was already trim on each tier that would provide
a finished edge. All I really had to do was cut them to
size and sew them unto the pillow covers.
I cut each tier off and pinned it in place.
Then sewed it on.
I did that 4 times on each pillow cover, sewing it to the front side only.
And BAM!!
I had my own rumpled, white, ruffly, shabby pillow shams!
For an extremely frugal price.
I realize that this rumpled shabby look might not be for everyone,
and to tell the truth – 10 years ago I was the type of person
who would have ironed the heck out of this stuff and made the bed
look so perfect you could bounce a coin on it…
But I am not that person anymore.
Someday I will tell you about her, and how she met her demise….
In the meantime, I hope some of you will be able to use this
idea and get the look you want for less!!
Thanks so much for coming by!
Linking up to these parties!

You’re so resourceful! Love the sham and the whole bed. Very calming and pretty, just like a bed should be.

Brilliant. I love how soft and romantic and summery it feels. I used to be the iron the pillowcases gal too,…..life is nicer when you ease up a bit isn’t it. (My hubbie and the dogs slowly, consistently wore it out of me, lol). Looks great.

Love them, Sharyl! I am not above doing something like that myself. In fact, I have decided recently to look for things at the thrift store when I’m there that have ruffles that might be able to be used for things like curtains, pillows, tablecloths {etc.}. Not that I’ve been to the thrift store in a couple of months, but it’s there on my mental thrift store list! I love how you took something store bought and basically made it your own. These shams are one of a kind! I enjoy the lazy lifestyle, myself. It helps cut down on some of the everyday stress.

Great idea, but I would wear the sundress!! In fact, I just bought one like that, but it has a different top with straps
Searching the thrifts for ruffles is a great idea!! Right now, I’m looking at the red toile panels I have and thinking – pillow covers – LOL thanks for the inspiration. PS – love the white and blue. We’re in the process of re-doing the bedroom and I’m trying to settle on colors. Everything I see is white on white, but the room is too big for me to do that and I’m not sure about the monochromatic thing.

And I can’t wait to hear about the Death of the Iron Nazi. Please don’t keep us waiting too long…

Hi Sharyl! You have taken something pretty and turned it into something prettier. Great reuse/recycle project. I am always on the lookout for fabric in thrift stores as well. I love velvet and silk dresses which can be turned into beautiful pillows or window coverings. My sister-in-law turned an old favorite sweater of mine into a pillow–love:)

I just love how you always seem to see “the other side” to something…I have to get better at being so resourceful!
I tend to be the bounce-the-coin kinda gal when it comes to the look of our bed but I do so love this “lazy summer” look…not lazy, cozy!
