Somebody Give Me A Sign….Tutorial..
I have been working on a couple of Family Name Signs this week for upcoming weddings.
I decided to do a post to show you some of the signs I have made this past year
using old cabinet doors from the Habitat For Humanity Restore- I get them there for $2 or less
per door, they are such an inexpensive base that can be used for so many different projects!
I hope you enjoy seeing what I have done with them!
This was one of the first one’s I made.
You can see these people have been married a long time..
That wife must be pretty old by now – probably a G-Ma…
For this sign I ordered the vinyl lettering from an online shop.
You can see the tutorial for this sign at this link:
(This is one of my early posts and the picture quality, well the overall quality really, reflects that!)
This was another cabinet door project that I made to use as either a sign
or a serving tray. I used some pre-made vinyl lettering that I found at the
Dollar Tree. This made the total cost much less, but I obviously had a smaller
selection to choose from, and couldn’t make anything personalized.
But I still loved it – I gave a couple of these as gifts and the recipients loved them!
You can go see this tutorial here:
This is another one I made using vinyl from Dollar Tree,
I also made a couple of these as gifts. I love the black and white combination.
You can find this tutorial here:
I made this sign to hang with my Grandchildren’s photo collage on our Family Room wall.
I love the scripture, and I feel like it not only completes the arrangement, it also defines it.
For this one, as it was more personalized, I ordered the vinyl lettering from an online store again.
I believe this is the last one I did that with, because I purchased my own vinyl cutter
soon after this – a Silhouette. I have to tell you I was so excited to get it!!
You can see this tutorial here:
Once I got my own machine I decided to try my hand at a subway sign
like the ones I had been seeing all over the crafting blogs.
I used words from several Bible verses that have meant a lot to me.
I really love the way it turned out, and it was good practice for learning how to use the machine!
You can find this tutorial here:
Then I decided to crank out a cute little coffee sign to put up on our new beadboard wallpaper in our kitchen.
I really do like the black and white look – I love the contrast and retro look it gives.
You can find this tutorial here:
Recently I made this Family Name Sign for my brother and his new wife.
This was my first project using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and boy am I hooked on it!
I loved making one that was a little more shabby chic looking – and they loved it too!
This tutorial can be found here:
Here is one of the ones I have been working on this week. Once again I used the Chalk Paint
and went for that shabby look. I am quite enamored with it myself…
Unfortunately it isn’t for me!
I still have to put the lettering and hooks on this one! I really love the little
wooden appliqué I used on this one. I was thinking I could turn the cabinet door
sideways, making it look like a front door to a home,
and put something on it like “Welcome to our home” or ” Behold I stand at the door and knock”
But, this one is already slated as a Family Name sign for a wedding.
Guess I will just have to make another run to the Habitat For Humanity Restore
and stock up on some more doors!!
I hope you have enjoyed this “sign” tour -
I am actually giving some thought to making them to sell.
I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas you might have on that.
Would this be something you think people would want to buy?
Thanks so much for coming by – love you guys!
Hookin up with some fun Par-Tays!

Oh, what a timely post. My dad and his (new) wife just had a surprise wedding and I really want to make them one of these signs. Thanks so much!!!
As for starting to sell them,….absolutely you should go for it. You do beautiful work, certainly of an appropriate quality to be able to sell. And really, what have you got to lose?
Good luck – I know you’ll succeed.

I think it would be a great thing for you to sell. There are alot of people that would to purchase these as there are some peopl,e that are not that talented but would love to give a personal gift of that magnitude to people they know. I have read so much about the Anne Sloan Chalk paint and I have some projects that I am working on that I think would be perfect painted with this paint. I guess I am going to have to break down and buy it. Also I wanted to thank you for your blog and how much time you put into it, I enjoy reading it and it gives me so many ideas of things to do if only I had more time to do them in.

I think they look great! I don’t know much about selling things online, but I think they would sell. Would shipping be expensive?

Oh, Sharyl! I love, love all of these. Great idea to check out the Restore for old cabinet doors, you found some unique shapes & sizes. Great job on them all. I have a Silhouette machine too & just might have to try one of those subway signs. Gorgeous! Definitely think you could sell these!

What a great crafting idea and a wonderful gift to present to your friends and relatives. Not to mention, to begin a cottage industry! I’ve only just bought the chalk paint and have yet to attempt a project. My goal is to re-do my breakfast room table. WHEN I find the time… LOL

I can’t believe I just came across your site! I love love love what you did and I just bought 12 doors at my local ReStore last week (before I found your site) for… yep, $2 each. I am actually using mine to build nightstands but now I will be taking ANOTHER trip back to get some more doors to do some of your awesome signs! I guess I should wait till I finish this project (along with repainting all of my bedroom furniture and upholstering my headboard…) or my husband will probably flip from me coming home with more odds/ends for projects. My ReStore is awesome and they just did a grand re-opening which is what inspired me to take a trip over there since it had been a while since I went.
Thanks for the inspiration!

Hello! My name is Carrie. I live in Illinois and I LOVE your blog! I’m a huge Pinterest fan and have seen lots of your work on there.
I have decided to start making Christmas gifts for everyone. It’s more fun and personal I think. I’m particularly interested in refurbishing old cabinet doors. I love the family name signs, etc. GREAT idea! I was wondering what kind of Silhouette machine you bought. I looked at the 2 websites you posted on your blog site for font ideas. I will probably order from them for the first little while. But if I keep doing this I figured it would be more cost effective plus more convenient to make my own lettering. Where did you purchase yours? How much? Just wanted to get some advice from someone who uses one on a regular basis. Thanks so much!!
