3 Key Tips To Keeping Your Resolution
Resolution-
As I grow older, I find that the things I resolve to do or change
look very different than they used to.
Through the years my resolutions have become less about an outward change,
and more about an inward or heart change. And as that has happened I have
come to realize that it where it all begins anyway. Very few outward changes
will last long without first changing your pattern of thinking about it.
However – the things you can do to help yourself sustain your resolve
remain the same. Today I would like to share with you some that work for me.
One thing I have resolved to work on this year is becoming more Courageous.
If you come here often, you will remember that is my word of the year.
Here is the first key to help you keep your resolutions.
1) Physical reminders
I went online and found some quotes that included the word Courage.
I made them into images that I could print out and put
in key places so that they would catch my eye daily.
Some of the key places that work for me include my bathroom mirror,
my refrigerator, my car, and my desk at work.
Using one of them as the background picture on your phone
or computer works well to, if you are using them often.
When I see these reminders, I take the time to look at my day and see if there
is any area that I am holding back and not doing/saying something out of fear.
I think about things I have coming up and resolve again to meet them
with a courageous attitude.
2) Accountability
Have you ever decided to go on a diet, and choose not to tell anyone
just in case it wasn’t successful? Only to find that it wasn’t very successful?
There is great power in sharing a change you want to make in your
life with one or two friends. Just vocalizing a commitment makes a
difference in the success of it. And then when a choice comes up that
goes against your resolve, you realize that there are others who will be
watching what you do. And I don’t mean that in a bad “big brother” way.
Choose friends who are willing to help you succeed, who will give you encouragement
and praise along the way. And who will inspire you to keep going when you fail.
Accountability can be invaluable when it comes to accomplishing your goals.
3) Celebrate Success Along The Way
People in general have a hard time celebrating success. We are so quick to move
on to the next challenge, we don’t take time to pat ourselves on the back when
we reach a goal or have a small victory. I believe we should take the time to stop
and congratulate ourselves. Maybe even set mini goals that when achieved, mean
we get to do something special. Like treat yourself to a massage, go out to coffee or a
movie with your friends. (And be sure to tell them what you are celebrating)
Making a new habit or breaking an old one takes at least 30 days before it begins
to become automatic. You should be proud of yourself and celebrate every month you
are able to keep up with a change. Change is hard.. and that is why it takes resolve.

Accountability is definitely key for me. My best friend and I are that for each other. We have helped each other stick with a particular goal–eating less junk–for 9 years now! I’d call that success. Good luck to you on being courageous this year in whatever direction that takes you!
