Cabinet Redo and Birdcage Pot Rack
Some of you may remember that my husband and I have been
refinishing our kitchen cabinets for the past couple of weeks as he has been laid off.
(On a related note – we will soon be able to track the weeks of unemployment by the new growth
of the dark roots in my hair… I may need to try my hand at some “Frost and Glow”…)
This is what we have been using on our cabinets. So far we have not had to
get an additional kit, so I would say it has a good amount of coverage.
Here is a picture from back in December. You can see the cabinets in the background.
We put them in around 17 years ago, and they are still in good shape.
I was so very tired of the wood look, however.. Hubby and I disagreed on painting them.
He likes to see the wood grain. So we compromised with the Rustoleum kit.
And I really really really like it..
Here is the first post I did with tutorial of the kit:
Kitchen Cabinet Transformation
And yes, since you ask.
That is a birdcage I have on the ceiling with my pots hanging from it.
We took my old pot rack down to make room for the new light.
I decided I still wanted a rack, but a much smaller one.
I racked my brain (aren’t I so funny!)
trying to think of something I could repurpose to hang my pots from.
I saw this decorative birdcage in my living room and decided to give it a try.
I like it..
It is different and free – you can’t beat that.
It is pretty hard to beat refinished cabinets for $74 too!
Of course, we bought all the hardware at about $4 per piece,
so that brings the total price up to about $174 – still a bargain though.
We still have the 3 cabinets under the sink to do – but you know me
I can never wait to show things off!
I am trying now to figure out if I want to switch out some of the things I
have out on the counters. I love the pop of red – but the black really stands out too.
I hope you enjoyed seeing our little Diy project!
I am sure you will see this room again…ya’ll know I like to show off…… ;-)

Your cabinets have really brightened up the kitchen. I love the birdcage turned pot rack- great for a compact storage idea, and so cute, too!

I love your kitchen. But I have one question…you have so many decorative items on your counters…very cute–but do you have crumbs hiding among them? That’s what I’ve got on my counters–you know–back in the corners and between the canisters
.

I am seriously the kitchen Natzi.. I am constantly wiping down the counters and am a fanatic about keeping them clean! I added a couple of things for the pictures I took, not everything is out all the time either.

Nice job! I sanded, primed & painted my dark oak cabinets (white). That was over 5 years ago. Alot of work. They need to be done again. I’ve heard of the transformation system. What all is involved and for how long was your kitchen out of commission.

First off, there is no sanding! That was one of the selling features for me! The kit comes with a deglazer, bonding coat, and stain. The thing that takes the longest is waiting for each coat to dry. You could probably get an entire kitchen done in one weekend if you devoted both days to it.

I’m actually surprised to say that I really like the finished look. I’m a real-wood look kitchen gal myself, so I didn’t think I’d like your cabinets painted white. Your husband and I would probably get along well. Despite that, I think the finished product is stunning! Great job as always. I don’t know why I doubted you for a second!

One kit has covered your whole kitchen? I have been looking at the kit and was worried about how much it would cover. My kitchen is much smaller than yours. Also did you re-finish the edging of your counters? I have the same edging on my counters and am trying to decide to either just do the edging or to use one of the counter top kits.

I have the same old oak wood grain cabinet color in my kitchen. A few years back my husband and I refinished them. I would love to paint them, but it is one of the last projects he and I did together before he passed away. I just can’t talk myself into changing them. I will just live vicariously through pictures of Yours

We only have three cabinets left to do, and I think we will have to go buy some more of the stain. But we should be able to just get a little can of it for under $10. And yes, we did do the edging and I am happy with the way it turned out!

Sooo nice! I really need to do this, but I need one like yours that is sturdy enough to take on the load. This will be perfect because my kitchen is teeny tiny, and I’ve got to get those pots up and out of the way…but I really want that decorative touch because our house is that great room everybody sees everything from the front door layout. Know what I mean? Do you know where you got your birdcage from? By the way, I knew you didn’t have crumbs hiding amongst your nice things. You’re like me: we want it clean, efficient, and why not have it look nice to so that you can enjoy your space too? You’re awesome.

Are your cabinets real wood, I asked because they look like me and I know that mine aren’t. Can you tell me if you added a glaze to it. This may seems like I’m rude but I really want to do this to my kitchen, I can sort of see the wood pick thru. Would you mind responding via email.
Thank you

Oh my gosh – I LOVE it!! I painted my cabinets white (they were dark wood) about 8 years ago and it was such a chore sanding them down, etc.! I noticed that big box said NO stripping, sanding, or priming! Now THAT’S my kind of product! ha ha Your kitchen looks gorgeous! And how clever to use the birdcage as a pot rack! I’ve always wanted a pot rack, but our kitchen is so teeny tiny (not even a window in it), that there’s no room to put a pot rack as cabinet doors would be opening into it. If you’re ever interested in checking out our mini kitchen makeover, it’s on my sidebar! So glad I popped over to see yours!!… Donna
