$8 Shelf Makeover

I thought I would share with you a quick little make-over I did this weekend.

No, not on me – a makeover in my living room πŸ˜‰

We have been working on that room since Christmas ended.

(I am not ready to show the whole room yet..)

But I just had to show you the inexpensive thing I did

to change my built in bookshelf by our fireplace.

This is how it looked for Christmas. This entire wall has been the bane of my

existence since we bought this house 21 years ago..

You would think I would have done something with it by now πŸ˜‰

It has horrid woodgrain paneling on it, and my husband does not think

there is sheet rock behind it, so it would be a pain to remove.

Especially because we would have to deal with the fireplace that is

right in the middle of the wall.

Anyway…

I decided to re-paint the wall a light yellow to go with the rest of the room.

Unfortunately – that made my off white pottery look awful..

I am not altogether fond of the built-in shelf anyway.

(Sorry – this is turning into a grumpy-pants post isn’t it….)

As most of you know – money has been really tight for us for most

of this past year. So I put my creative hat on and brainstormed what I

could do to make it look better without spending much money.

I decided to go check out the scrapbook paper at Michael’s Craft Store.

I brought home three different kinds, but this was the one I fell in love with.

I got 8 pieces of paper for a dollar each!

I love the way it sets off my pottery.

And I also like the pattern it brings into play.

Because I used pre-cut paper, I didn’t have to worry about cutting

it to fit and having differing sizes or uneven edges.

And yes – as a very lazy crafter- I taped it up…..

The nice thing about that is I can change it out easily.

And it would also work nicely for a renter that is unable to make

permanent changes toΒ theirΒ home.

As you can see from the above picture, I have not figured out the mantel yet –

I am still playing with that.

But I have rearranged the room and put up some old curtains…

I also ordered a rug with money I got for Christmas – it is on is way.

Insert huge squeal here!

Here is a picture of it – can’t wait till it gets here!!

So gorgeous!!!

Big thanks to the peeps that gave me money for Christmas – you know who you are πŸ˜‰

I got the rug at rugsusa.com for 65% off and free shipping..

I love it so much –

I will probably wear it as coat and sleep with it on our bed for awhile ..

I am pleased to report that I am much happier with my shelf right now..

And I am also happy with the price I payed to get the look!

___________________________________________

Hope you are having a wonderful start to the new year.

I have had lots of things going on the past few months, a lot of growing andΒ stretching.

At least on the inside… πŸ˜‰

I am afraid my word of the year has chosen me…it was not one I wanted.

It is discipline.. as in self-discipline.

I need it in several areas..

I don’t know that I will do a post about it, but I just wanted you to know

where I am at.. πŸ˜‰

If anyone is interested in the craft paper, it came in some other colors too.

I loved the black especially!

I took a pic of the label in case you want to look for it –

That looks great! I love it. Great color choice, too.

Thank you! It is funny considering that blue has been my least favorite color for the past couple of years. I lived to long in the country blue and mauve era… πŸ˜‰

love the color and how it makes such a difference. Especially how the pillow in the chair plays off of it is great…..

    Sharyl@Thelittlebrownhouse Reply:

Thank you! I got the pillow a few months ago on clearance at Target – I seem to be building my room over the course of several months!

First, love the shelf make-over! Its amazing that the blue patterned background actually makes the pottery look like the color of the wall. At least in the picture anyway. Such a clever idea.

Second, self-discipline seems to have picked me for this year as well! I struggle with that word in so many areas of my life. Its not easy in this immediate gratification world we live in to say no on things that I know are not good for me (nor necessary). It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I’d love to read a post on how you came to your 2013 word.

Amazing how such a small change can make such a big difference! I love it! It’s going to look great with your new rug!

I’ve been waiting for my ‘word’ to come to me this year, and I just haven’t had anything……until I read your’s today…..

Is it possible that *my* word is *your* word? I literally felt a ‘thump’ in my heart the moment I read it. And then I immediately felt like running away from it….which is a sure sign that it’s something important for me! Hah!

All of this to say, thanks.

    Sharyl@Thelittlebrownhouse Reply:

That is pretty much the same reaction I had to the word!! Run!! I don’t think it will be an easy road – but I do think it will be good for me :-)

Love the very high end looking result! I am redoing our laundry room and want to line the back of the shelves with something and I think you just found it for me!

Holy. Stinkin’. Cow. That is amazing on so many levels! Never thought of using the “lace” paper. Perfect.

I see no reason to EVER bother with removing that wood grain paneling. The texture is a PLUS!!!!!

I just love the first line of your comment… I can actually hear you saying that, which is weird because we have never met!! πŸ˜‰

Fabulous!!! Totally creative and clever idea!
I know what you mean about the pottery color. I too have tons. It just doesn’t play well against a lot of other creams and yellows. :-/ Great save!!!!
Looking forward to seeing your room come together. πŸ˜€

Thank you so much! I really like having the off-white pottery because it goes with everything, it just needs to be in a good setting to display well. (Kind of like me…. πŸ˜‰

so so nice putting that blue up there, love it. I too dread the country blue and mauve that is embedded in my brain, along with ceramic geese. lol.
and self-discipline is the hardest thing to achieve and takes the most practice, and I am with you, I need it more than anything.
    Best to you Sharyl!

    Sharyl@Thelittlebrownhouse Reply:

Oh the geese…. I have many memories there too!

What a great idea, especially for me, the frugal, lazy decorator! Guess who’s going to the scrap booking store tomorrow!

    Love the look!

What a GREAT idea. I really like the pattern on the paper. It almost looks like you could cut it out to make a stencil of it. Do you think that is possible, you are able to see it at a closer range then I can, what do you think of making it into a stencil? Give me your feed back on this on. Your built in looks really good and I love the rug you picked as well.
    God Bless
Have a wonderful healthy and happy new year

    Happy New Year, Sharyl!

That looks AWESOME! And they fit in that space perfectly…it was meant to be. πŸ˜‰

Discipline…send me some of yours if you get an abundance, em-k? :)

    Sharyl@Thelittlebrownhouse Reply:

Ha ha!!! An abundance???? Not likely!!
Ok – that was a defeatist attitude πŸ˜‰
I will have such an abundance of it I will be more than happy to share with all… πŸ˜‰

Talk about making the pottery become your stand-outs! They are beautiful (although I asked you about this area once before when it caught my eye). Your idea is phenomenal. I am going to see what I can find to use in a hutch I use to display my mother-in-laws demitasse cup collection. I think my husband would love it as well. I like the way you are bringing in the color in other areas. I can’t wait to see what you do with the mantle. And I don’t think this is close to the way blue and mauve was ever used. This is very hip and modern!

I am no expert but I have seen such papers being used as stencils and I have done so too but not on the walls. Gorgeous designs, I think they even have some lacy ones at Michael’s….

I was trying to reply to Debra about stencil, it didn’t post that way here :( Anyway, I just love what you did with the shelf. I don’t know how/why you thought of going to Michael’s when you wanted to work on that shelf. That in itself is sheer brilliance! I would’ve gone to Home Depot may be, what do I know?! I love Michael’s of course for craft supplies and that may be the reason I also need restraint when it comes to arts/crafts/paper/scrapbooking goodies.

    I also love the following:

Restore: we have 5 in our immediate area. I have many cabinet doors, drawers and drawer fronts.

Goodwill and Value Village (the kidney foundation thrift store). One of our Goodwill’s is a half price store and many items are sold by the pound.

White Glass…..love it. I am obsessed. Also plates, especially with a design in the center.

I feel so much of what I see in your posts. Great minds think alike.
    Thank you for sharing.

    Hi Sharyl,

You’re built-in shelf looks amazing with the new paper!! Such a huge difference for such a small price.

I have a tiny china cabinet that I am going to use your idea for, I can hardly wait to do it! Thank you so much for sharing your awesome ideas.
